TEXAS RETURNS HOME SATURDAY TO FACE WEST VIRGINIA: After splitting a pair of road games, Texas is back home Saturday to face nationallyranked West Virginia, which is coming off a last-second 31-30 loss to TCU that snapped a four-game winning streak. The Longhorns, looking to become bowl eligible, play two of their final three games at home. The Mountaineers are a perfect 3-0 on the road this year. HORNS EARN ROAD WIN, KNOCK OFF TEXAS TECH: Senior Malcolm Brown led a potent rushing attack and the Texas defense shut down Texas Tech’s prolific offense in the second half to claim a 34-13 road victory Saturday. Brown tallied a season-high 116 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns as Texas took control in the second half to pull away from the Red Raiders, who entered the game ranked among the top 25 nationally in both total offense (483.8 yards per game) and passing yards, but were held to 381 yards of offense. UT held Tech’s offense to just 149 total yards in the second half and built on a 17-13 halftime lead. Walk-on freshman Vincent Testaverde was limited to 116 yards passing for Tech after coming in to relieve an injured Patrick Mahomes, who was already starting in place of banged up Davis Webb. While the Texas offense rolled up a season-high 241 rushing yards, the defense took advantage of a pair of inexperienced quarterbacks by posting a season-nest 10 pass breakups and forcing eight punts in the Longhorns’ sixthstraight win over the Red Raiders. THE WEST VIRGINIA SERIES: Texas and West Virginia are meeting for the just the fourth time, with the Mountaineers winning two of the three prior games. WVU won 7-6 in 1956 and 48-45 in 2012, their first-ever meeting as conference foes.

since posting 281 vs. the Red Raiders last year. Brown rushed 22 times for a seasonhigh 116 yards against Texas Tech. After averaging 120.5 rushing yards over the first four games, Texas has posted 172.0 over the last five. UT rushed for 190 yards vs. a Baylor defense that ranked No. 6 in the nation in rushing defense (80.0 ypg). The Longhorns followed up with 148 yards (40 attempts), including 78 by Brown and 50 by Swoopes, vs. Oklahoma. The Sooners entered the game ranked No. 22 nationally in rushing defense, allowing 109.6 yards per contest. • Leading up to the Kansas game, Texas announced a pair of personnel updates. QB David Ash decided to retire from football due to his injury history and DT Desmond Jackson had surgery on his injured foot (vs. UCLA) and is out for the year. STREAKS, TRENDS AND MILESTONES: • With three receptions vs. Texas Tech, Jaxon Shipley now has 51 catches on the season. The senior is one of three players in school history to record three 50-reception seasons. He had a career-high 59 catches in 2012 and 56 last season. Shipley joins Mike Adams (1993, ‘95-96) and Roy Williams (2001-03) on the exclusive list. • Malcolm Brown continues to move up the UT career rushing yards list. He posted 116 yards on 22 carries vs. Texas Tech to pass Adrian Walker (2,473/1989-92) and move from 13th to 12th. He has 2,503 in his career and needs seven more to reach 11th. That marked Brown’s 11th career 100-yard rushing game, which moved him from a ninth-place tie to a seventh-place tie on the UT all-time list. Brown also chipped in two rushing touchdowns and has a team-high six on the season and 24 in his career. He needs three more rushing TDs to reach the UT career top 10. • John Harris posted five receptions for a career-high 165 receiving yards, including 123 in the first half, vs. Texas Tech. He

had a career-long 68-yard reception in the second quarter, which set up a Johnathan Gray 17-yard TD run. He posted his third career 100-yard receiving game (all this year) and second in the last three games. His receiving yardage total ranks tied for No. 18 on the UT all-time single-game list and the most since Mike Davis also had 165 (on four catches) vs. Texas Tech in 2012. • The defense had one of its best games knocking down passes vs. Texas Tech. The Longhorns were credited with a seasonbest 10 pass breakups, including a careerhigh four by Duke Thomas. Texas had four PBUs in three other games this season. It marked the most PBUs in one since the Longhorns had 13 vs. Texas A&M in 2011. • The Longhorns have been forced to utilize five different starting lineups along the offensive line. The lineup - LT Marcus Hutchins, LG Sedrick Flowers, C Taylor Doyle, RG Kent Perkins and RT Camrhon Hughes - has been the same the last three weeks, though Perkins played sparingly vs. K-State due to injury. Darius James subbed for him in that game. • Texas has 12 interceptions this season after posting 10 all of 2013. That is the most for UT in the first nine games since recording 16 in 2009. That year they finished with a nation’s-best 25 interceptions. The Horns rank tied for 11th nationally in interceptions and tied for 39th in turnovers gained (16). Texas Tech entered last week’s game ranked No. 123 nationally in turnovers lost (20) and 122nd in turnover margin (-1.50) and then surrendered the ball twice. The Longhorns are tied for 63rd in the FBS in turnover margin (even). West Virginia comes into this week’s game tied for No. 117 in the FBS in turnovers lost (20) and tied for 121st in turnover margin (-1.33). • Sophom*ore Dylan Haines, a former walk-on turned starting safety, posted the Longhorns’ second interception return for a touchdown this season in the Iowa State

the game into overtime when Anthony Fera booted his fourth field goal of the game, a 24-yarder with 13 seconds left in regulation. PRODUCING EXPLOSIVE PLAYS: Though the offense was limited in explosive plays (12-plus yard rushes/16-plus yard catches) two weeks ago at Kansas State, finishing with six (four rushing, two passing), the Horns had their best production of the season in three of the last four games. Last week vs. Texas Tech, the Longhorns rebounded with 10 (six rushing/four receiving), including three John Harris receptions of 35 or more yards. Against Oklahoma on Oct. 11, Texas had a season-best 12 explosive plays and followed with nine vs. Iowa State (four on the ground and five in the air). Two of the explosive plays came during the final drive of the game (3 plays, 68 yards, 19 seconds) to set up the game-winning 21-yard field goal by Nick Rose. UT has 11 pass plays of 30 or more yards this season and eight occurred over the last four weeks. WRs Jaxon Shipley (32), Marcus Johnson (41) and John Harris (38) each had a recep-

tion of more than 30 yards vs. Oklahoma. Harris had catches of 32 and 45 yards in the Iowa State game. Texas’ season best prior to OU was seven explosive plays (vs. North Texas and Baylor). SACK ATTACK: The Longhorns have combined for 27 sacks over the first nine games and rank tied for 18th in the FBS (3.0 per game). Twelve players have been involved in a sack this season, including five with 2.0 or more. DT Hassan Ridgeway leads the way with 5.0. He is tied for ninth in the Big 12 and tied for 80th nationally (0.56 per game). DT Malcom Brown and LB Steve Edmond are tied for second with 4.5. They rank tied for 11th in the Big 12 (0.50 pg). Texas has at least three sacks in six games this season. Baylor entered the Oct. 4 game as one of only two teams in the nation not to allow a sack (also New Mexico State) and the Longhorns took down QB Bryce Petty three times. The Bears had no sacks in their first 163 pass attempts of the season.

SOLID START Sophom*ore Tyrone Swoopes has performed solidly in his first eight starts. His numbers compare favorable to many of the top quarterbacks in school history through eight career starts. He ranks fourth in passing yards (1,723) and total offense (1,960), behind only James Brown (1994-95) Major Applewhite (1998) and Garrett Gilbert (2010). DID YOU KNOW? Tyrone Swoopes’ 384 yards of total offense (334 passing/50 rushing) vs. Oklahoma were the most ever in Red River Showdown history, besting OU’s Sam Bradford’s 382 in 2008. HOLDING BAYLOR’S HIGHPOWERED OFFENSE IN CHECK: Baylor entered its Oct. 4 game with Texas ranked No. 1 in the FBS in scoring (56.8 points per game), first in total offense (641.0 ypg) and fourth in passing offense (401.3 ypg) and the UT defense held the Bears well below those averages as they produced 389 yards of total offense, including 111 passing yards. It marked just the second time in the last 45 games Baylor posted less than 400 yards of total offense (370 vs. TCU in 2013) and it was the lowest passing yards output by the Bears since the final game of the 2008 season (91 vs. Texas Tech). UT held Baylor’s explosive plays to a minimum. The Bears had five runs of 12-plus yards and only three pass plays of 16 or more yards. DIRECTING THE OFFENSE: Sophom*ore Tyrone Swoopes has started the last eight games at quarterback. He has had some of his best showings of the season recently, combining for 800 total yards of offense vs. Oklahoma and Iowa State, then passing for 228 yards in a win at Texas Tech. • On the season, Swoopes has completed 156 of 263 passes (59.3 percent) for nine touchdowns and five interceptions. His 1,723 passing yards are the fourth-most by a Texas QB in the first eight starts of his career. • Against Iowa State, he became just the third player in school history to pass for 300 yards and rush for 90 in the same game. Texas • 300 passing, 90 rushing yards Colt McCoy 304 p/175 r ____ (vs. Texas A&M, 2009) Tyrone Swoopes 321 p/95 r ______ (vs. Iowa State, 2014) David Ash 343 p/91 r__ (vs. New Mexico St., 2013)

• That came on the heels of a 334-yard passing performance vs. Oklahoma, making him just the fifth QB in school history with consecutive 300-yard passing games, joining Colt McCoy (three times), James Brown (twice), Major Applewhite and David Ash.

• Swoopes has thrown at least one touchdown pass in six of his eight starts (Baylor, K-State). Against Oklahoma he set career highs in completions (27), attempts (44), and passing yards (334). After completing less than 50 percent of his passes (16 of 34) vs. Baylor, he rebounded to complete 61.4 percent vs, the Sooners. He was 7 of 13 for 99 yards and two TDs on third-down passing. • In his starting debut vs. BYU, Swoopes was solid, completing 20-of-31 passes for 176 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He completed his first eight attempts of the game, and although he was unable to lead his first scoring drive until the third quarter, he showed promise. On the TD drive, Swoopes led a 13-play, 75-yard drive in which he went 6-of-6 for 53 yards, including a 13-yard TD to John Harris. • In his second start, Swoopes went 24 of 34 for 196 yards and two TDs vs. UCLA. He again got off to a hot start, completing his first 11 passes, and was 11 of 13 for 104 yards and two TDs on Texas’ two touchdown drives. Swoopes made the first road start of his career and helped Texas win 23-0 at Kansas. He completed 19 of 34 passes for 218 yards and two TDs, along with a 7-yard rushing TD. Swoopes was 6-for-8 for 75 yards and one touchdown on third downs. In his second road start, at Kansas State, he was 13 of 25 for 106 yards while leading the team with 31 rushing yards. He again went 13 of 25 last week at Texas Tech, this time finishing with 228 passing yards and a touchdown.

REVAMPED OFFENSIVE LINE: With three starters lost from last year, the Longhorns were going to have a somewhat different look to the offensive line this year. Dominic Espinosa entered the season having started the last 39 games at center, but after suffering a fractured ankle vs. North Texas the senior is out indefinitely and the Longhorns are now minus their most experienced lineman. Junior Kennedy Estelle made eight starts a year ago and opened the UNT game at left tackle, but did not play vs. BYU and UCLA due to suspension and was subsequently dismissed from the program. Potential starting tackle Desmond Harrison missed the first eight games due to suspension. • That left Texas with a group that entered the BYU game with a combined five starts: sophom*ore right tackle Kent Perkins had two, junior left guard Sedrick Flowers had two and junior left tackle Marcus Hutchins had one. Hutchins moved over from the defensive line during preseason camp. Meanwhile, right guard Taylor Doyle and center Jake Raulerson made their first career starts vs. BYU. That group started again the next two games but the Longhorns shook up the lineup vs. Baylor, when redshirt freshman Darius James started at right tackle, moving Perkins to right guard. That group helped Texas average 4.8 yards per carry and total 190 rushing yards which were then season highs. • Texas again altered the lineup vs. Oklahoma when Doyle replaced Raulerson at center. The latest shakeup saw sophom*ore Camrhon Hughes play in his first career game when he started at right tackle

O-LINE JELLING DESPITE ADJUSTMENTS Despite five different starting combinations in nine games, the Texas offensive line has found a consistent lineup the last few weeks. The offense has produced its top three outputs of the year the last four weeks (482 vs. Oklahoma; 512 vs. Iowa State; 469 at Texas Tech). The Longhorns are averaging 172.0 rushing yards over the last five games after posting 120.5 during the first four contests, including a season-high 241 on the ground at Tech. 2014 Texas Football Notes • vs. West Virginia [Nov. 8]

vs. Iowa State, marking the fifth different combination of starters Texas has used this season. The Longhorns have since stuck with that lineup and against Texas Tech, totaled a season-high 241 rushing yards. • Flowers is the only player to start every game at one position (left guard). CATCHING ON: Texas came into the season without much returning receiving production beyond senior Jaxon Shipley and junior Marcus Johnson, but has found a playmaker in John Harris. The fifth-year senior, who came into the season with nine career catches, has been the breakout wide receiver, posting 48 catches for a team-high 814 yards and six touchdowns. His 90.4 yards per game rank fourth in the Big 12 and 19th nationally while his 5.3 receptions/game are tied for ninth in the league. He ranks tied for sixth in the Big 12 and tied for 29th nationally in TD receptions. Harris has three 100-yard receiving games (110 vs. North Texas, 147 vs. Iowa State, career-high 165 vs. Texas Tech) this year. • Harris had the first multiple-TD game of his career vs. Oklahoma when he caught two. He followed that up with 147 yards and a career-high nine receptions vs. Iowa State, including a key 29-yard catch with seven seconds remaining that set up the game-winning field goal. Last week against Texas Tech he posted five catches for a career-high 165 yards, including a careerlong 68-yarder. He has led the team in receiving yards in seven of nine games. • Shipley, meanwhile, has posted 206

receptions (fourth all-time at UT list) in his career after catching 51 for 500 yards in the first nine games. Johnson ranks third on the team in catches (21) and yards (267).

es rank as the seventh most among the nine teams, with Washington State (four players with 45 or more receptions and 248 total) leading the way.

HARRIS HAS THE SCORING TOUCH: John Harris had one TD reception in each of the first four games, becoming just the second player in school history to accomplish that feat. Jordan Shipley had at least one TD catch in the first eight games of 2008. Harris has gone on to post six receiving TDs, including two vs. Oklahoma, on the season to become one of 10 players in school history with at least six TD catches in the first nine games. Harris’ TD streak of four straight games, snapped vs. Baylor, ranks tied for fifth in UT history.

ONE-TWO PUNCH IN THE BACKFIELD: Senior Malcolm Brown and junior Johnathan Gray give Texas a formidable running back duo. Brown and Gray are one of just six twosomes in the nation to return after each rushing for more than 750 yards last season. Brown rushed for 904 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 105.1 rushing yards over the last eight games. Gray is fully recovered from a torn Achilles that caused him to miss the final four games last season. Gray averaged 4.9 yards per carry on 159 attempts, finishing the season with 780 rushing yards. • They have handled nearly all the work in the backfield, with Brown carrying it 131 times for 533 yards (4.1 ypc) and Gray rushing 103 times for 445 yards (4.3 ypc). Brown has a team-high six rushing TDs, including two vs. Iowa State and two vs. Texas Tech, while Gray has three. The duo is coming off its best game of the year as Brown had a season-high 116 rushing yards and Gray had 77 vs. Texas Tech. • Behind Brown and Gray, UT is youthful with just two scholarship backs on the roster: true freshmen Donald Catalon and D’Onta Foreman. Foreman has seen action in four games while Catalon has yet to play.

LOOKING FOR AN INCREASED ROLE: Texas has three tight ends on the roster with extended playing time. Seniors Greg Daniels and Geoff Swaim were the starters last season, including five games together. While Daniels and Swaim were a key in the running game last season, the duo com-

bined for just six catches. M.J. McFarland, the No. 3 tight end, did not have a reception in his 11 games. McFarland has posted nine catches so far this season, including a 2-yard TD catch vs. UCLA and a 1-yard TD reception vs. Kansas, while Swaim has nine catches for 68 yards, including a career-best three catches vs. K-State. A knee injury caused Daniels to miss the first three games (he returned vs. Kansas) so freshman Andrew Beck was moved to tight end in the preseason and has played in all nine games. Looking back at Louisville last year, Charlie Strong’s offense had two tight ends - Gerald Christian (28) and Ryan Hubbell (14) - combine for 42 catches. During 2012, Hubbell (14) and Nate Nord (13) combined for 27 receptions. That same season, McFarland (8) and Daniels (5) were more involved in the UT passing game, combining for 13 catches. IN THE TRENCHES: Texas is relying on a stout and experienced defensive line. Senior Cedric Reed has been the starter at strong end while junior Shiro Davis, sophom*ore Caleb Bluiett and redshirt freshman Naashon Hughes have made starts at fox end. Junior Malcom Brown and sophom*ore Hassan Ridgeway have occupied the tackle positions. The Horns are without

FAVORITE TARGETS Senior wide receivers Jaxon Shipley and John Harris have been the favorite targets in the receiving corps for Texas this year. Shipley leads the team with 51 receptions and his 5.7 catches per game ranks tied for 42nd in the FBS. Harris has 48 catches, with his 5.3 receptions per game ranked 56th in the nation. The duo is among just eight Longhorns to have made at least 48 receptions in the first nine games of a season. In addition, Harris’ receiving yards total (814) is the fourth-highest total in school history through nine games of a season. Most Receptions by a Texas Player (First 9 games of a season) Rk. senior Desmond Jackson who suffered a foot injury vs. UCLA that will sideline him for the remainder of the season. • The line has helped Texas record 27 sacks in the first nine games (3.0/game) which ranks tied for 18th nationally and is the most by UT in the same span since it had 27 in 2009. • After recording four sacks vs. North Texas, the Longhorns had six vs. BYU, three vs. UCLA and four vs. Kansas. Texas became the first team to record a sack of a Baylor QB in the matchup with the Bears, finishing the game with three. After making just one vs. Oklahoma, the Longhorns had three against Iowa State, two at K-State and one at Texas Tech. • Ridgeway leads the team with 5.0 sacks while Brown has 4.5, Bluiett and Davis has 2.5 and Reed has 1.5. Brown’s 10 tackles for loss are second on the team behind Steve Edmond. DEPTH AT LINEBACKER: Texas has depth at linebacker, where five players who started in at least one game last season returned in 2014. Senior Steve Edmond, an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection last year, anchors the middle, while senior Jordan Hicks and junior Peter Jinkens are atop the depth chart at the outside positions. The Longhorns have utilized mostly nickel sets with Edmonds and Hicks as the two starting LBs. Dalton Santos (seven starts) and Timothy Cole (one) also have

starting experience from last season, while Demarco Cobbs (six) and Tevin Jackson (two) have starting experience from 2012. • Hicks has played at a high level, recording 115 tackles, including nine for a loss, in the first nine games. He also has two interceptions on the year, with one coming vs. North Texas and the other vs. Kansas. Edmond is second on the team with 95 stops, including a career-high 19 vs. Baylor when he also had two sacks. His 11 TFLs lead the team while his 4.5 sacks are tied for second. PLAYMAKERS IN THE SECONDARY: With experienced playmakers Quandre Diggs, Duke Thomas and Mykkele Thompson, the Longhorns have a wellequipped secondary and proved that by allowing just 177.3 passing yards per game which ranks ninth nationally (15 vs. UNT, 181 vs. BYU, 226 vs. UCLA, 140 vs. Kansas, 111 vs. Baylor, 129 vs. Oklahoma, 345 vs. Iowa State, 224 vs. K State, 225 vs. Texas Tech). • In six conference games, Texas leads the league in both pass defense (195.7 yards per game) and pass efficiency defense (106.5 rating). The Longhorns have allowed opponents to complete just 55.6 percent of their passes while making seven interceptions. • The unit had an impressive day against the high-powered offense of Baylor, holding QB Bryce Petty to 7-of-22 passing for just 111 yards which was the Bears’ lowest passing output since Nov. 29, 2008 when they had just 91. • The secondary has also helped the Longhorns record 12 interceptions which is tied for 11th in the nation. Thomas has a team-high three, while Diggs and Dylan Haines have two. Adrian Colbert has one. • Diggs, a three-year starter, and Thomas, a junior who started 10 games a year

ago, man the cornerback positions. With 45 career starts under his belt, Diggs is the most experienced player on the team. Manning one of the safety positions is Thompson, a senior who has seen action in 47 career games including 27 starts. Sophom*ore’s Adrian Colbert and Dylan Haines along with freshman Jason Hall have also made starts at safety this season. Sophom*ore Bryson Echols made his first career start vs. Texas Tech, opening the game as one of three cornerbacks. KICKING GAME: After serving as the kickoff specialist each of the last two years, junior Nick Rose took over as the placekicker this season and has connected on 9 of 14 field goals, including five of his last six. Rose had his best game vs. Iowa State, when he connected from 45 yards (then career long) and then hit the game-winner with :03 left from 21 yards. He was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week. Rose has also been valuable on kickoffs, recording 34 touchbacks on 43 kicks. The Longhorns have had just seven kickoffs returned this season, the fewest in the nation. • Senior William Russ took over as the No. 1 punter and is averaging 43.1 yards per punt, which ranks 33rd nationally and 11th on the UT single-season list. He has placed 22 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and has just three touchbacks. Seventeen of his punts have been fair caught and 16 have traveled 50 yards or more. Twice this year Russ has averaged better than 50 yards per punt in a game (50.5 vs. UCLA, 50.7 vs. Iowa State). BREAKING DOWN THE 2014 SCHEDULE: UT is playing eight games this season against teams that reached a bowl game in 2013 and four of its first eight opponents ranked among the top 12 in the nation.

RARE COMBINATION John Harris recorded 165 yards and Malcolm Brown rushed for 116 against Texas Tech. In program history, Texas has only had a receiver post in at least 165 yards and a running back rush for at least 115 yards five other times, the last occurring in 2003. Three of the six occasions have happened in Lubbock. Those bowl teams all registered at least eight wins. Last season, UT played nine teams that were in bowl games in 2012. UT only leaves the state of Texas three times in 2014, but the schedule is one of the more challenging in recent history. All three nonconference opponents - North Texas, BYU and UCLA - reached bowl games. The Longhorns are one of only two Big 12 teams without an FCS foe on the schedule. After playing its first two games at home against UNT and BYU, the Longhorns played UCLA in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. As of Nov. 2, the Longhorns schedule is tied for 42ndmost difficult, according to NCAA.org. The Longhorns’ past and future opposition has a winning percentage of .554 (46-37). PRODUCING STRONG TEAMS: Featuring an explosive offense and stingy defense, Charlie Strong’s Louisville squad ended 2013 ranked 15th in both the USA Today Coaches and Associated Press polls after compiling a 12-1 record, including a 7-1 mark in the American Athletic Conference. The Cardinals capped the year with a dominating 36-9 win over Miami (Fla.) in the Russell Athletic Bowl. The Cardinals led the nation in nine team categories: total defense (251.5 yards per game), rushing defense (80.7 ypg), thirddown conversion defense (26.7 percent), sacks (3.31 per game), fewest passes intercepted (4), fewest turnovers lost (10), fewest first downs allowed (183), completion percentage (70.8) and punt-return defense (1.15 yards per return). Not surprisingly, last year’s team produced a number of NFL-caliber players. In fact, the Cardinals had three first round picks in the 2014 NFL Draft and four selected in the top 75, both tied for first in the nation. 2014 NFL Draft • First Round Selections 1. AMONG THE CAREER TOP 10 IN RECEIVING: Jaxon Shipley cracked the top 10 in career receptions in the 2013 Ole Miss game and the top 10 in career receiving yards three weeks later vs. OU. He is now fourth in career receptions (210) and sixth in receiving yards (2,433). Last season, Shipley led the team in receptions (56) and was second in receiving yards (589). This year, he is again first in receptions (51) and second in receiving yards (500). Texas • Career Receptions

DUAL THREAT: Not only is Jaxon Shipley one of the top wide receivers in school history, but he’s also among the best punt returners. Shipley ranks No. 9 on the school’s all-time return average list at 9.9 (35 returns for 347 yards). This season, Shipley ranks fifth in the Big 12 and 28th

nationally in punt-return average (10.0). His two longest returns this year - 41 yards vs. Kansas and 31 yards vs. Oklahoma - set up touchdowns. RECEIVING MILESTONE: The Longhorns have 14 games in school history in which they have produced a pair of 100-yard receivers, but had their first occurrence of three players posting 90 or more receiving yards in the same game in the Oklahoma contest. Jaxon Shipley posted a career-high tying nine receptions for 115 receiving yards, Marcus Johnson had a career-high seven catches for a season-best 93 yards, and John Harris five receptions for 90 yards and two TDs.

GOAL-LINE STANDS Texas ranks tied for 20th nationally in red zone defense (75 percent) and once an opponent has penetrated the 10-yard line, the defense has been able to hold them to a field goal or less on nine occasions. Five of those nine times the opponent has come away with no points, including twice against Texas Tech when the Red Raiders missed a field goal in the first quarter and turned it over on downs in the fourth. MODEL OF CONSISTENCY: Jaxon Shipley, now a senior, has been one of the most consistent performers since he arrived on campus for the 2011 season. Shipley has caught at least one pass in 44 of his 45 career games played, including one in each of his first 33, a streak that was snapped against Texas Tech last season. He also has three or more catches in 37 games and at least five in 18 of the last 26 games. His streak of 33 straight games with a reception was the third longest in school history, just ahead of his older brother Jordan.

NEARING THE TOP 10 IN RECEIVING YARDS: After entering the season with just nine receptions for 190 yards in his career, John Harris now finds himself creeping near the UT all-time top 10 in single-season receiving yards. Harris has 814 receiving yards this season and needs 94 more to reach the top 10. He can also become just the sixth player in school history to record 1,000 or more in one year. STRONG IMPROVEMENT A long-time defensive coordinator, Charlie Strong’s teams pride themselves on being tough, physical and sound defensively. During his four years (2010-13) as Louisville head coach, the team improved in a number of categories culminating with last year’s top-rated defense in the FBS. The Cardinals were in the top 25 nationally in total defense in each of Strong’s four seasons. In the three years prior to his arrival, the Cardinals never finished higher than No. 65 in the FBS in total defense. FBS Rankings Total Def. Rushing Def. Pass. EXPERIENCED DIGGS LEADS THE SECONDARY: A two-time All-Big 12 selection (2011, 2013), Quandre Diggs is one of the most experienced and accomplished players on the team. A three-year starter, Diggs’ 35 career pass breakups and 10 interceptions are the most on the current roster, while he needs just one more pass breakup to break into the UT career top 10 list. The senior was named to the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy, along with the Jim Thorpe Award honoring the best defensive back in college football. Diggs has excelled in each of his three seasons at Texas. In 2011, he posted one of the top freshman seasons in school history for a defensive back. He was named the 2011 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and was a FWAA Freshman All-American. He tied the school record for interceptions by a freshman, matching Chris Carter’s mark of four in 1993. Diggs also had 15 pass breakups to rank second most on the UT freshman list behind Earl Thomas’ 17 in 2008. In 2012, Diggs led the team in both interceptions (four) and pass breakups (seven). Last year, he posted 58 tackles and a team-high 10 pass breakups. FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS: Texas has played eight true freshmen this season. TE Andrew Beck, WR Armanti Foreman, RB D’Onta Foreman, DB Jason Hall and WR Lorenzo Joe were the first to play, seeing time during the first three games. WR Roderick Bernard, DT Poona Ford and WR Dorian Leonard saw their first action in the Kansas game. Bernard played on special teams, Ford as a reserve along the line and Leonard in the wide receiver rotation. Hall, who opened the KU game at safety, became the first true freshman to start since Blake Gideon in 2008.

Strong’s offenses, meanwhile, also showed great improvement during his tenure at Louisville. The year prior to Strong’s arrival, the Cardinals ranked 91st nationally in total offense (334.1 yards/game), but improved their ranking by 20 spots in year one and checked in at 28th in the country last year (460.8 yards/game). Louisville was one of the most efficient third-down teams in the nation last year while ranking 25th in scoring, its highest ranking since 2007. Total Off. Pass. HOLDING BIG 12 OFFENSES IN CHECK In recent years, Big 12 offenses have been among the most prolific in the nation. So far this season, the Longhorns have held the offenses of their six league opponents in check. In league action, Texas ranks second in both scoring defense (23.3 ppg) and total yards allowed (367.7 pg), and first in both passing yards allowed (195.7 pg) and passing efficiency defense (106.5 rating). Baylor was held below 400 yards of offense (389) for the just the second time in 45 games and Oklahoma (232) had its lowest offensive yards output in seven years (230 vs. Colorado in 2007). BOYER EARNS A PAIR OF ACCOLADES: Senior Nate Boyer was named to the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Sept. 23 and a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the best football scholar-athlete in the nation, on Sept. 25. Boyer, a fifth-year deep-snapper, is the ninth Longhorn to earn a spot on the prestigious Good Works Team that each year pays tribute to a select group of student-athletes who have worked to positively impact the lives of others. He is among 22 collegiate players, including 11 at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level, on this year’s team. He was one of 167 candidates announced by The National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame for the Campbell Trophy. Candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. BROTHERLY TIES: The Texas football team has a family feel to it. The Longhorns have four sets of brothers on the current roster and five other players whose brother was a member of the program. Running back D’Onta Foreman and wide receiver Armanti Foreman are freshmen. Freshman offensive lineman Elijah Rodriguez and his brother Daniel, a sophom*ore, joined the team this summer. Camhron Hughes is a sophom*ore offensive lineman, and his brother, Naashon, is a redshirt freshman linebacker. Dakota Haines is a senior wide receiver and Dylan Haines is a sophom*ore safety. In addition, FB Dominic Cruciani (Michael - 2009-12), Quandre

Diggs (Quentin Jammer - 1997-98, 200001), Jaxon Shipley (Jordan - 2006-09), Chris Terry (Brad - 2011-12) and Kevin Vaccaro (Kenny - 2009-12) all have brothers who played at Texas.

ASH RETIRES: David Ash entered 2014 with high hopes as the team’s starting quarterback, but the fourth-year player was forced to retire from football on Sept. 22 after playing in just one game this year. He was looking to replicate a 2012 season which saw him start in 12 of 13 games and finish 15th in the FBS in completion percentage (67.3). Ash played in just three games last year, missing the final 10 to a head injury and earning a medical redshirt. He was one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the Big 12 having played in 29 games with 22 starts. However, head coach Charlie Strong announced Sept. 22 that Ash was giving up football, though he will remain involved with the team. He ends his career eighth on the UT all-time passing yards list (4,728), 10th in total offense (5,125) and seventh in touchdown passes (31).

GAMES ADDED TO FUTURE SCHEDULES: The Longhorns have recently adjusted their nonconference schedules. • On Sept. 17, Texas announced an agreement in principle with Michigan for a home-and-home series in Ann Arbor on Aug. 31, 2024, and in Austin on Sept. 4, 2027. The lone previous meeting came in the 2005 Rose Bowl. The two storied programs created a classic as Texas prevailed, 38-37, on Dusty Mangum’s 37-yard field goal as time expired. Vince Young accounted for 372 yards and five TDs, including 192 yards and four TDs on the ground, as the Longhorns won in their first BCS Bowl appearance to cap an 11-1 season. STRONG YEAR-BY-YEAR A two-time conference coach of the year and the architect of a revitalized University of Louisville program that posted at least 11 wins in each of the last two seasons, Charlie Strong is in his first year as the Texas head football coach. Strong, the 29th head coach in UT history, spent the past four seasons as Louisville head coach, re-energizing a program that was coming off back-to-back losing seasons (5-7 in 2008, 4-8 in 2009) and a 15-21 record in the three years prior to his arrival. He amassed a 37-15 record, a pair of Big East Conference Championships (2011, 2012) and was named Big East Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2012. He also led UofL to four straight bowl game appearances (3-1 record), including a victory over No. 4 Florida in the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl. During his final two seasons, Louisville was nation’s fourth-winningest program, posting a 23-3 record (88.5 percent) and registering bowl victories in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history. The Cardinals’ 11-plus win seasons in 2012 and 2013 were the fourth and fifth in school history and the first back to back. Louisville finished among the nation’s top 15 for a school-record second straight year. The Cardinals ended 2013 among the top 25 in both polls for just the ninth time in school history. Featuring an explosive offense and stingy defense in 2013, the Cardinals ranked 15th in both the USA Today Coaches and Associated Press polls (also No. 18 in final BCS Standings) after compiling a 12-1 record, including a 7-1 mark in the American Athletic Conference

Strong spent seven seasons as the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida under Meyer from 2005-09 and Ron Zook from 200304 where he helped the Gators win a pair of national titles – 2008 over Oklahoma and 2006 over Ohio State. From 2003-09, Strong’s defensive units at Florida allowed an average of 17.6 points per game, which ranked ninth in the country over that span. His stint as defensive coordinator marked his fourth tenure at Florida, including a stretch from 1991-94 in which he coached defensive ends (1991-93) and defensive tackles (1994) after coaching outside linebackers in 1988-89, and serving as a graduate assistant in 1983-84. He served as Florida’s assistant head coach from 2005-07 and was the associate head coach in 2008-09. Before returning to Florida for the fourth time, Strong received his first defensive coordinator assignment at the University of South Carolina under Holtz from 1999-2002. Outside of his time at Louisville, Florida, and South Carolina, Strong’s career stops have included one season (1985) at Texas A&M as a graduate assistant before moving on to Southern Illinois as wide receivers coach from 1986-87, one season (1990) at Mississippi as wide receivers coach and four seasons (1995-98) as the defensive line coach at Notre Dame. A native of Batesville, Ark., Strong was a three-year letterwinner (1979-81) and threetime all-conference safety at Central Arkansas, where he graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He and his wife, Vicki, have a son, Tory, and two daughters, Hailee and Hope.
