This is a classic green smoothie with enough sweetness but a little tanginess from the lime. It's a great way to start the day. The chia seeds add a little boost of protein and fiber.

And it's pretty easy to customize. Don't care for bananas? Use another fruit. Don't care for fruit? Use cauliflower or zucchini instead! Experiment (and keep experimenting) with various options until you have a few of your favorites on hand.

Here are a few more reasons to enjoy a green smoothie:

  • Great way to add more servings of greens into your day.
  • Quick and easy to make.
  • Easy to prep and store for the week.
  • They taste delicious.
  • They can be extremely filling.
  • You'll never get bored as long as you keep experimenting with different ingredients.

Top tips and variations

  • Blend the greens first: If you don't have a high-speed blender, blend the greens and liquids first. This will lead to a smoothy, velvety smoothie after you add the remaining ingredients.
  • Freeze bananas: Bananas had natural sweetness and fiber to smoothies. I prefer to slice them up and freeze them in advance. That way they are cold and I don't have to worry about slicing them up in the morning.
  • Soak dates: If you're going to use dates, soak them beforehand, for about 30 minutes. You don't need to do this, just helps them blender smoother, and this step isn't needed at all if you have a high-speed blender.

FAQs

Is it good to drink a green smoothie every morning? ›

The answer is yes, absolutely. Green smoothies are still a great way to get the nutrients your body craves.

What is the dark side of green smoothies? ›

Concerningly, green smoothies may also have adverse effects on the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland requires the mineral iodine to produce thyroid hormones. Cruciferous vegetables—common ingredients in green smoothies—contain compounds called glucosinolates, which inhibit iodine uptake by the thyroid.

How do you thicken a smoothie without dairy? ›

Choose high-fiber fruit + veg

Fruits like bananas, mangos, pineapples, and peaches have a thicker flesh and result in an incredibly smooth consistency. Veggies like carrots, cauliflower, celery, and spinach are high in fiber, mild in taste, and add body to smoothies.

Do green smoothies reduce belly fat? ›

Can you lose weight by drinking a smoothie every morning? ›

Yes and no. While most weight loss experts don't recommend substituting smoothies for every meal of the day, drinking them here or there (or even daily) can support weight loss goals. It all depends on what they contain and, of course, their portion size.

Smoothies made with water and juice tend to come out more liquidy and less full than those made with milk. Juice is also higher in acidity and typically has more sugar than most milk. Milk is higher in calcium which is good for your bones, heart, and muscles. It also helps to give your smoothie a creamy consistency.
